He Thought He Was Above the Law—Then a Single Video Ended His Career

The Strike

It was over in seconds. But the damage was done.

On October 10, ICE agent Mario Alberto Morales drove his unmarked SUV into Miguel Parra Hernández, a 48-year-old Mexican construction worker, as he ran through a Houston parking lot. The impact broke Parra Hernández’s leg in three places. He also suffered hip and ankle injuries.

Morales didn’t stop immediately. Body camera footage shows him continuing to drive, making sharp turns, before finally getting out. When he saw Parra Hernández on the ground, he said, “He got hit with a car, bro.” Then, “I was coming in and I hit him with the car.”

For weeks, Morales claimed it was an accident. His attorney called it “clearly just an accident” and accused local officials of “inventing a crime out of thin air.”

But Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare had the video. And the video told a different story.

The Threat

Morales wasn’t just any agent. He was a former Army paratrooper, a onetime congressional candidate who ran under the name “Bam Morales.” He had a past—a 2013 misdemeanor theft charge for stealing DVDs, dismissed after a fine.

But the real threat wasn’t his record. It was what he represented: a federal agent accused of using his vehicle as a weapon during an immigration operation. The case quickly became a flashpoint in the national debate over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Prosecutors say the collision was intentional. They charged Morales with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—a second-degree felony. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Morales planned to turn himself in on Monday. His attorney maintained his innocence. But the damage to public trust was already done.

The Trump Card

Then came the grand jury. On Friday, October 30, a Harris County grand jury indicted Morales on felony aggravated assault charges. The decision was swift.

But the real trump card? The body camera footage.

“The video clearly contradicts ICE’s account,” District Attorney Teare said at a news conference, playing the footage for reporters.

Surveillance video also showed Morales’ Jeep Cherokee speeding over a median and driving directly toward Parra Hernández as he ran away. The images were undeniable.

Now, Morales is set to surrender. The case is one of the few criminal prosecutions of federal agents during the immigration crackdown. And it’s far from over.

But the question remains: Was this justice—or just the beginning?

What do you think? Should federal agents be held to a higher standard? Or is this a politically motivated prosecution?
