He Thought He Was Above the Law—Then a Grand Jury Dropped the Hammer

The Indictment That Shook Houston

HOUSTON — The gavel fell. And it fell hard.

On Friday, a Harris County grand jury indicted ICE agent Mario Alberto Morales on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charge stems from an October 10 incident where Morales, 33, struck a fleeing construction worker with his unmarked SUV, breaking the man’s leg in three places.

But this is no simple accident case. Prosecutors say the video tells a different story—one of intentional violence.

District Attorney Sean Teare didn’t mince words. He played Morales’ own body camera footage for the press. In it, Morales is heard saying, “He got hit with a car, bro,” and “I was coming in and I hit him with the car.”

That’s not a accident. That’s a confession.

The Victim and the Cover-Up

Miguel Parra Hernandez, 48, was just trying to escape. According to witnesses and surveillance video, he was running through a parking lot when Morales’ black Jeep Cherokee sped over a median and plowed into him.

Parra Hernandez suffered a broken leg, hip, and ankle injuries. He was then taken into custody—a final indignity.

ICE initially claimed Parra Hernandez ran in front of the vehicle. But that story crumbled under the weight of the video. Teare stated plainly: the video contradicts ICE’s account.

Morales’ attorney, David Lindenmuth, called the incident “clearly just an accident” and accused local officials of “inventing a crime out of thin air.” But the grand jury didn’t buy it.

This isn’t Morales’ first brush with the law. In 2013, he was charged with misdemeanor theft for stealing four DVDs. He paid a fine and struck a plea deal. He later ran for Congress under the name “Bam Morales,” touting “compassion, integrity, service, and accountability.”

The irony is thick enough to choke on.

The Trump Card: Body Cam and a Broken System

What makes this case different? The evidence is irrefutable.

Morales’ own body camera footage shows him driving aggressively, making sharp turns, and then the car shakes as it runs over something—or someone. He gets out, sees Parra Hernandez on the ground, and speaks to him in Spanish as the man clutches his leg in agony.

Protests erupted after the incident, demanding accountability.

This case is among a small number of criminal prosecutions of federal agents during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. It raises a chilling question: how many other incidents go unreported, uninvestigated, or covered up?

Morales plans to turn himself in on Monday. If convicted, he faces years in prison. But for Parra Hernandez, the damage is done—physically and emotionally.

As the sun sets on Houston, one thing is clear: the badge is not a shield. And the grand jury just proved it.

What do you think? Should federal agents be held to a higher standard? Or is this just a tragic accident?
