Federal Judge Just Shut Down Trump’s Plot to Steal Alaska’s Senate Seat—But He’s Not Backing Down

The Strike: Judge Gleason’s Gavel Comes Down

In a stunning Sunday morning rebuke, U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason dismissed the Trump administration’s brazen lawsuit aimed at halting Alaska’s Senate election certification.

The ruling came in a 20-page order that dismantled the government’s case in one stroke. The Justice Department had argued—absurdly—that the preamble of the National Voter Registration Act gave them standing. Gleason wasn’t buying it.

“The court lacks jurisdiction,” she wrote. “The United States’ amended complaint must be dismissed.”

Less than two hours later, the federal government announced it would appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. But the clock is ticking—and the window to steal the seat is closing fast.

The Threat: A Multi-Million-Dollar Scheme to Overturn the Will of Voters

This was no ordinary lawsuit. It was a calculated move to subvert democracy.

President Trump personally ordered the filing last week, according to the Alaska Beacon. The suit demanded that the state be barred from certifying any winner other than incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan—even if he lost.

The scheme was as audacious as it was undemocratic. It sought to segregate all ballots showing votes for a namesake challenger, Dan J. Sullivan of Petersburg, in a cynical attempt to manipulate the outcome.

“Today’s ruling is a victory for democracy and a clear message to Donald Trump and Senate Republicans: No one, no matter how powerful, can toss out free and fair elections just because they don’t like the result.” — Devan Barber, DSCC executive director

Polling averages show Democrat Mary Peltola slightly ahead of Sullivan. If she wins, her victory could determine control of the Senate. That’s why Trump pulled out all the stops.

But the threat didn’t end with the lawsuit. The DOJ’s appeal signals that the fight is far from over. And with criminal investigations continuing, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The Trump Card: Peltola’s Path to Power

Mary Peltola is poised to make history. If elected, she will be sworn into office—and the Trump administration’s efforts to block her will have been for nothing.

But the legal battle is not yet won. The 9th Circuit could still intervene. However, legal experts predict the appeal may be moot if Sullivan wins or if Peltola’s margin exceeds the votes for Dan J. Sullivan.

The Trump card? The will of the people. And a federal judge who refused to let it be trampled.

But as the appeal looms, one question remains: Will justice prevail, or will the forces of obstruction find another way to undermine democracy?

What does it say about our system when a sitting president tries to overturn an election—and the only thing standing in his way is a judge’s gavel?
