Although the nation as a whole was wrestling with the onset of the Great Depression, the Packard model range of 1931 was as grand as ever, and it was not until 1932 that Packard was forced to start selling more affordable cars. 1931 Packards featured 19-inch wheels as well as an increase in horsepower and a four-speed transmission. In the case of the 833, the 319 cubic inch straight-eight made a full 100 horsepower. The 833 also rode on a 134.5-inch wheelbase and was available in an impressive range of both open and closed body styles.
This 1931 Packard 833 is a Dual Cowl Phaeton, one of the more attractive and desirable styles of coachwork fitted to the 833 chassis. It is finished in silver and has a red coachline with black paint above it and on the fenders. The interior is gorgeous red leather, and the car is impressively equipped with a black cloth convertible top piped in red, chrome wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, dual sidemount spares with attached rear view mirrors, Trippe lights, dual windshields, stainless steel mesh radiator stone guard, Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, rear-mounted trunk rack with black leather trunk, a full set of side curtains and a locking storage compartment in the back of the front seat. Early Packards like this are considered Full Classics™, and this car is a past CCCA first prize winner that is still very much showable. It is a full, ground up, nut and bolt restoration done to show quality standards and it looks like it. The graceful Dual Cowl Phaeton coachwork with its dual windshields and long, open passenger areas also make it an ideal automobile for touring or for display. In 1931, this Packard exemplified discerning taste as well as considerable success, and would have provided great enjoyment for its driver and passengers. Over eighty years later, it still does all of those things.
