Amid constant political threats from Washington about cutting defense budgets and pulling troops out of Europe, a statement like this usually sounds like European anxiety masquerading as confidence.

But underneath the diplomatic rhetoric lies a much sharper story about raw geopolitical leverage. Stubb is not making a desperate plea for American charity. He is exposing a brutal reality that Washington rarely admits out loud: the U.S. does not maintain its European presence simply to protect its allies. It stays because Europe is the only forward-operating base that secures American global dominance.

For years, the political debate in Washington has framed NATO as a massive financial burden where the U.S. pays the bill and Europe reaps the benefits. Stubb completely flipped that narrative. He pointed directly to the Kola Peninsula, just across the Finnish border, where a massive portion of Russia’s nuclear arsenal is stationed.

The uncomfortable truth is that those strategic weapons are not aimed at European capitals like Helsinki, Stockholm, or Vilnius. They are aimed squarely at New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and Miami. By expanding and maintaining NATO territory, the U.S. is not just buying security for Europe; it is buying direct access, surveillance, and a critical buffer zone against the nuclear weapons pointing directly at American soil.
