BREAKING: California has officially banned the use of deadly pesticides known to cause Parkinson’s disease. The headline looks like a straightforward, feel-good victory for public health. The chemical at the center of this fight, paraquat, is highly lethal. It is so toxic that it is already outlawed in more than 70 countries worldwide, including the European Union and China. Yet in the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has repeatedly reapproved its use, allowing millions of pounds to be sprayed across American agricultural heartlands every year.
This creates an uncomfortable trade dynamic. The primary manufacturer of paraquat is Syngenta, a massive agricultural conglomerate owned by a Chinese state-owned enterprise. This means a foreign-owned entity is heavily profiting by selling a lethal, Parkinson’s-linked chemical to American farmers—a substance that its own home country has explicitly banned to protect its own citizens.
California did not just ban the chemical by decree. The state passed a law requiring regulators to deeply review the health risks of paraquat, forcing manufacturers to submit new scientific data. Rather than hand over that data, the pesticide makers voluntarily canceled their state registrations. They chose to abandon the largest agricultural market in the United States rather than let their internal health science see the light of day.
When a foreign-owned corporation chooses market surrender over transparency, it signals that the hidden data is likely far more damaging than a localized ban.
This local victory highlights a massive federal vulnerability. Washington frequently frames its foreign policy around protecting American infrastructure, data, and agriculture from foreign adversaries. Yet when it comes to the chemical realities of the US food supply, federal regulators are actively shielding a toxic status quo that other global powers abandoned years ago. California had to step in because Washington refused to.
As the ban takes effect, the battle lines are shifting. The focus is no longer just on California. The real fight is whether the US federal government will continue to allow foreign-owned giants to treat American farmland as a dumping ground for chemicals deemed too dangerous for the rest of the world.
