The Texas Trap: Why John Cornyn Is Letting Ken Paxton Starve

The headlines out of Texas look like standard political infighting. Republican Senator John Cornyn recently labeled his former primary opponent, Ken Paxton, as a “poor campaigner” who is “lazy and doesn’t raise money”. In a stunning moment, Cornyn made it explicitly clear he will not campaign for Paxton, opting instead to direct his massive fundraising network to Senate races in other states. But dismissing this as a bruised ego misses the larger strategy at play.

This is not just big drama happening down in Texas. This is a deliberate stress test of political power. Cornyn is drawing a hard line: winning a bitter primary runoff does not automatically grant access to the traditional donor class. By publicly refusing to open his checkbook or his network, Cornyn is effectively starving the top of the ticket.

The underlying tension is financial. Paxton currently faces a massive funding deficit against his Democratic challenger, who has vastly out-raised and out-spent him on the airwaves. Traditional establishment donors are keeping their wallets closed, watching to see if populist enthusiasm can translate into actual campaign infrastructure without their help.

If Paxton struggles, the establishment proves its necessity. Cornyn’s message is unmistakable: populist figures may win the base, but they still need the old guard to win the general election. He is essentially daring external super PACs to bail Paxton out.

This creates a dangerous game of chicken for the party. If millions are suddenly redirected to defend Texas, it drains vital resources from tight races in battleground states. If the money never arrives, a traditionally safe seat becomes a genuine liability.

The strategy is clear, even if no one wants to say it out loud. The establishment is willing to risk an uncomfortable, razor-thin margin in Texas just to prove a point about who truly controls the party’s financial leverage.
