State investigators argue they desperately need these federal records to identify co-conspirators, track visitors, and bring local criminal charges. The federal government, however, has refused to hand them over.
The stated reason from the Department of Justice is privacy. Federal officials argue they are legally bound by strict court orders to protect victim identities. They claim that handing unredacted evidence to New Mexico prosecutors would violate federal law and re-traumatize the very survivors the state claims it wants to help.
But New Mexico is aggressively rejecting that narrative. The state is essentially accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing victim privacy to enforce a federal cover-up. By withholding the names and details, the state argues, Washington is not shielding the victims—it is actively shielding the enablers, staff, and elite visitors who facilitated the abuse at the ranch and never faced justice.
