Mary Peltola vs. Dan Sullivan: The Strange Plot to Flip Alaska’s Senate Seat

BREAKING: A new poll shows Mary Peltola leading Republican Senator Dan Sullivan 51-49 in Alaska. But that is not the real story. The real story is that there is a second Dan Sullivan on the ballot. Republicans are calling it a deliberate trap to steal the election.

The headline looks like a straightforward political earthquake. Mary Peltola, a popular Democratic former congresswoman, has edged past incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan in a deep-red state. For national Democrats looking to expand their Senate majority, this is the exact momentum they need.

But beneath the polling data is one of the most bizarre and contested ballot fights in recent history. A retired teacher, also named Dan Sullivan, filed to run as a Republican for the exact same Senate seat just days before the deadline. Senator Sullivan and the National Republican Senatorial Committee immediately cried foul, labeling him a “sham candidate” deliberately planted by Democratic operatives to confuse voters and siphon critical votes away from the incumbent.

The Alaska Supreme Court recently ruled that the second Dan Sullivan must be allowed to remain on the ballot, forcing the state to differentiate the two men by adding “Incumbent” next to the sitting senator’s name. This is not just a strange coincidence; it is a direct exploitation of Alaska’s unique top-four primary and ranked-choice voting system.

The hidden power move here is that the mere presence of a namesake candidate creates structural chaos. Even if a fraction of voters check the wrong box out of confusion, it could easily cover the two-point margin separating Mary Peltola and Senator Sullivan. The GOP is panicking because they understand that in a race this tight, a gimmick might actually work.

There is another way to read this: critics may argue that Senator Sullivan is simply an unpopular incumbent trying to blame a local retired teacher for his own weak polling against a formidable opponent like Peltola.

But that defense ignores the timing and the explicit party switch by the second Sullivan just to enter the race. The defense establishment within the GOP is furious because they are now forced to spend massive resources simply teaching voters how to identify their own candidate.

The strategy of ballot confusion may be ethically questionable, but the execution has been legally bulletproof so far. The uncomfortable question is whether this “sham candidate” loophole will become a standard tactic in tight Senate races nationwide.
