By forcing Ukraine to listen to praise for Putin in their own capital, the U.S. envoys are demonstrating that Washington’s leverage is now being used to corner Kyiv, not Moscow.

Jared Kushner’s latest diplomatic trip to Kyiv was supposed to demonstrate American commitment to ending a devastating war. Instead, it delivered a breathtaking geopolitical insult. Standing in the very capital that endures relentless Russian strikes, the U.S. envoy described the need for a “win-win” deal that helps Vladimir Putin achieve his “aspirations” for his country. He openly praised the “very good dialogue” and “extra-friendly” conversations held with the Kremlin just hours earlier.

This is not just a diplomatic gaffe. It is a calculated and deeply revealing signal. By standing in Ukraine and reframing an unprovoked invasion as a legitimate political aspiration, Kushner is stripping away the moral and legal realities of the conflict. He is applying corporate real estate logic to a war zone, treating territorial conquest, destroyed cities, and massive human casualties as minor friction points in a boardroom merger.

The Kremlin could not have scripted a better American messenger. Putin’s core objective has always been to force the West to acknowledge his imperial ambitions as valid security interests. When a designated U.S. negotiator publicly normalizes those goals in front of the victims of that aggression, Moscow wins the narrative war without firing a single missile. The very concept of a “win-win” settlement fundamentally implies a moral equivalence between the invader and the invaded.

For Kyiv, the message is chilling. Kushner even boasted about the U.S. hoping to resume trilateral negotiations where “everyone was speaking in Russian to each other” in a “very extra-friendly manner”. To a Ukrainian public fighting to preserve its national identity against forced Russian assimilation, this remark was tone-deaf to the point of being hostile. When Ukrainian journalists confronted the delegation, asking Steve Witkoff how he could comfortably sit at the table with an international war criminal, Witkoff’s response—that Putin’s team had treated them “respectfully”—only deepened the sense of betrayal.

This diplomatic theater reveals a severe shift in leverage. The U.S. envoys are not using American power to corner Putin; they are using it to apply maximum pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. By openly flaunting their “friendly” ties with Moscow while standing on Ukrainian soil, Kushner and his team are reminding Kyiv exactly who controls the lifeline of Western support.

If “positive dialogue” and fulfilling Putin’s “aspirations” are the new foundation of American foreign policy, the international order is entering a dangerous new phase. For many Americans watching, the spectacle of their envoys acting as soft-spoken negotiators for a hostile adversary is a moment of profound diplomatic shame. Rewarding a dictator’s war with a “win-win” settlement does not achieve lasting peace. It merely sets the price for the next invasion.
