The Mamdani-Oz Divide: Why Political Allegiance Matters More Than Religion

Dr. Oz is Muslim. Zohran Mamdani is Muslim. Yet in the American political arena, they navigate entirely different realities. The public narrative often frames political friction around religious identity, suggesting that being a Muslim in public office is an inherent liability. But a closer look at how these two figures are treated exposes a sharper, more uncomfortable reality. Religion is not the actual issue. Political allegiance is.

When Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race in New York City, he faced immediate and intense scrutiny. Critics labeled him an existential threat, often leaning on his religious identity to amplify the attacks. But the backlash was rarely just about his faith. It was a reaction to his political allegiance, specifically his democratic socialist commitments and his vocal support for Palestinian rights. Mamdani refuses to soften his foreign policy stances to appease the political establishment, making him a prime target for what some analysts call “strategic Islamophobia”.

In contrast, look at Dr. Oz. He is a prominent national figure who operates within the mainstream political and media establishment. He faces little to no systemic pushback regarding his faith. The difference is not how they practice religion. The difference is that Dr. Oz’s political allegiance aligns with conservative power structures and avoids challenging the establishment on issues like Palestine. He is given a pass because his politics do not threaten the existing order.

This dynamic exposes a profound hypocrisy in how identity is weaponized. When a politician aligns with the establishment, their religion is treated as a piece of trivia. When a politician like Zohran Mamdani challenges the establishment’s foreign policy or economic consensus, his religion is suddenly weaponized as a tool to disqualify him.

The attacks on Mamdani are not a generalized fear of Islam. They are a calculated power move designed to silence a specific political agenda. By framing the attacks as a religious issue, critics obscure the real debate over foreign policy, leverage, and who gets to challenge the status quo.

This is no longer just about Dr. Oz or Zohran Mamdani. It is a warning about how the rules of political survival are actually written. The establishment does not care about a politician’s faith. It cares about whether that politician will fall in line.
